INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

BEPPU, 2004

First Circular

DATE AND LOCATION

1 – 4 November 2004 in Beppu, Kyushu, Japan

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

This International Symposium will discuss and create a new multi-disciplinary approach for the Earth Sciences emphasizing the physical and/or chemical processes that take place within the gActive Geosphereh.  The symposium is organized by the 21st Century Centers of Excellence (COE) program in Kyoto University. This is a multi-disciplinary research and educational effort in the Earth Sciences. We are forging new investigations of the lithosphere, oceans, and atmosphere to study the Active Geosphere.

Please see our webpage.

THEME

gThe Active Geosphere in Convergent Regionsh

We will emphasize the various phenomena of water, heat and material circulations and their multi-time scale variations as related to convergent plate boundaries, especially focusing on the variations in the gActive Geosphereh near the subduction zones of the Philippine- Sea Plate.

The program will include invited lectures and contributed oral/poster presentations.

Invited speakers and their tentative titles are listed below.

Dr. Chang-Hwa Chen (Inst. of Earth Sci., Academia Sinica)

gTemporal and Spatial Evolution of Arc Magmas along the Philippine Sea Plate Subduction Zoneh.

Professor John Eichelberger (Dept. Geology & Geophysics, Univ. of Alaska)

gVolcanoes : Windows into the Active Geosphereh.

Professor Marvin Geller (Inst. for Terrestrial and Planetary Atmospheres, State Univ. of New York)
