Report of 4th KAGI21 International Symposium

4th KAGI21 International Symposium
Venue: Clock Tower Centennial Hall, Kyoto University
Data: December 4-5, 2006

The 4th KAGI21 International Symposium was held on Dec. 4-5, 2006 at the Clock Tower Centennial Hall on the campus of Kyoto University. The theme of the meeting was 'Interdisciplinary Studies of the Active Geosphere'. The purpose of the conference was to review the recent research activities of KAGI21 and discuss opportunities for future interdisciplinary studies in geophysics.

At the beginning of the symposium, a summary of the KAGI21 activities over the past year, was presented by project leader, Shigeo Yoden. There were then two keynote lectures representing fluid and solid earth geophysics, by Marvin Gellar (State University of New York, Stony Brook) and Stephan Nielsen (Geofisica e Vulcanologia).

The symposium had three main sessions with a total of 6 invited talks by guests and 12 contributed talks from KAGI21 members. The program can be seen on the webpage,

Session 1. Atmosphere-Ocean Variations in the Tropics

Robert Vincent (University of Adelaide) and Justin Small (University of Hawaii) presented invited lectures about coupling processes in the Earth atmosphere and oceans. KAGI21 members presented results from modeling of processes in the ionosphere, atmosphere, and oceans. Also, a KAGI21 project to study paleoclimate from stalactites in Indonesia was described.

Session 2. Subduction Zones

Invited speakers, John Eichelberger (University of Alaska) talked about the characteristics of large calderas around the world and Kazuro Hirahara (Kyoto University) talked about simulation the earthquake cycle using the Earth Simulator. KAGI21 members presented new results from geochemical and seismological research related to subduction zones.

Session 3. Sumatra Earthquake

There were invited talks by Sri Widiyantoro (Institut Teknologi Bandung) and Yi-Ben Tsai (Pacific Gas and Electric Company) describing the tectonic setting and effects from this large devastating earthquake in 2004. KAGI21 members presented interdisciplinary studies describing gravity, regional water level changes, and ionosphere disturbances caused by the earthquake.

Recent research activities of KAGI21 members were also presented in 77 posters, which were on view for both days of the symposium.

In connection with the symposium, there was a public lecture on December 2 where Shukuro Manabe (Princeton University) and Fujio Masuda (Doshisha University) spoke about recent topics in global warming and climate change. The public lecture was attended by about 150 people.

On Dec. 6, an external review panel, chaired by Marvin Gellar, met with KAGI21 members and prepared a document containing evaluations and recommendations for this COE project.
