2. The 4th KAGI21 International Summer School: Computer Exercise

The computer exercise series involve a collection of computer programs designed for numerical modeling and simulations. The execution of the programs was made easier through the use of user-friendly interface. The use of Matlab graphics to visualize computational results is an efficient way to understand the effect of varying different parameters involved in a given model. Each participant was able to perform his or her own numerical experiments by choosing various parameters in agreement with the description given in the textbook. It was able to help us understand more the basic physical processes described by a set of differential equations which is essential in different complex phenomena in Earth Science.

Opening ceremony and Opening session

Active Geosphere Science, from Asia and Oceania to the World"と題し、本地域における活地球圏科学研究の持つ意義に関して、様々な視点から公演が行われた。

Session I and Session II

I "Fluid Session of the Active Geosphere Science" が開かれた。

II "Indonesia as an Important Region for the Active Geosphere Science" が開催された。

5. The 10th Kyoto University International Symposium: Active-Geosphere Mini Field Trip

It was a great experience for me to join the KAGI21 International Summer School and the 10th Kyoto University International Symposium (KUIS) held at Bandung, Indonesia. On the 2nd day of the KUIS, July 27, we had a field trip activity. We visited Tangkubanparahu volcano and Lembang fault scarp. Tankubanparahu volcano and Lembang fault are located at the northern part of Bandung city, and can be reached easily by vehicle.

Tangkubanparahu volcano (~2000 meters above sea level) is one of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia. "Tangkuban" in Sundanese language means upside down, while a "Parahu" means a boat or ship. So, "Tangkubanparahu" means an "upside down ship". Actually this volcano looks like an upside down ship, when we see it from Bandung and Lembang. In Indonesia, there is a legend about Tangkubanparahu. A man named Sangku Riyang was disappointed in love and kicked a ship which he had made for his honeymoon with anger. The ship flied far away and was turned upside down, and finally became Tangkubanparahu.

Gunungbatu hill (Lembang fault)

Tankubanparahu has twelve craters, which spread out on the top and the slope of this volcano. Ratu crater and Upas crater are its two main craters. In 1992, 2002 and in the middle of April 2005, its volcanic activity became very active, although there was no explosion.

We also observed Lembang fault scarp from the top of Gunungbatu hill which is the best place to observe it. Lembang fault is a remarkable geological landmark in Bandung highland. The scarp of the fault is 22 km long and extends from Mount Palasari in the east and Cisarua area in the west. The field trip gave us good information and knowledge on Tangkubanparahu volcano and Lembang fault.

Session III, Session IV and Panel Discussion

Session "Solid Session of the Active Geosphere Science" およびSession "oupling Session of the Active Geosphere Science" が開催され、さらに最後の締めくくりとしてPanel discussion "Active Geosphere Scicences for Human Activities in the Tropics" が行われた。

Why is the ocean so cold?"

Panel Discussion

Field Training
