A geochemical observation of rainwater in Bandung, Indonesia

We will report here results of a geochemical observation of rainwater at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in Bandung City carried out during the 2nd investigation of Indonesian limestone caves of J3b project of KAGI21.

Rainwater was collected by a hand-made rainwater sampler installed on the weather observation site in ITB (Photos a, b and c) between June 1 and June 5 in 2006. Because of dry season, total precipitation during 5 days was only 4mm but volume of the rainwater sample (about 100mL) was enough for chemical analysis of major constituents and measurement of pH. Results of the chemical analysis and the pH measurement with measurement of air temperature are shown in Table 1. The rainwater during this observation term was severe acid rain (pH=3.9). The potential acidity (pAi) of the rainwater is calculated to be 3.9 and this is equal to the actual pH value of the rainwater. The accord between pAi and pH indicates that this acid rain did not have been neutralized at all by basic materials in the atmospheric air. Chemical equivalent concentrations of nitrate and non sea salt (nss) sulfate ions of the rainwater were 0.039 meq/L and 0.090meq/L, respectively, and then sulfuric acid will be chiefly responsible for this severe acid rain.

As it had rained heavily on the first day of this observation term, we also took rainwater overflowed from an eaves trough for water isotope analyses (δD, δ18O and tritium concentration) (Photo d). Stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios of the sampled rainwater (δD=-3.36‰, δ18O=-16.1‰) are plotted almost along the global meteoric water line (δD=8×δ18O+10) on the δD-δ18O diagram (Fig. 1). Tritium concentration of the rainwater sample was 1.5±0.2TU and this value suggests that tritium concentration level of rainwater in the equatorial region is getting restored to a natural level from the sharp increase in the early 1960’s by the nuclear bomb tests (Fig. 2).
